Couples therapy helps to create a neutral space to explore emotionally-charged issues in the relationship with the help of a therapist. Common issues explored during couples therapy include: threats of divorce, communication problems, infidelity, sexual problems, issues with money, drug and alcohol use, work commitments, lack of emotional intimacy, power struggles, and parenting or family problems. Couples therapy may be as brief as 10 to 15 sessions, or continue for many months. Many couples, however, wait to long to seek couples therapy so it can take up to 6-8 months for full effect of couples therapy treatment. If during the couples therapy process, it becomes apparent that one or both partners may be struggling with individual issues that would be best supported in personal individual therapy, the couples therapist will discuss this with the couple.
